Asunción Chosen to Host 2031 Pan American Games

The Paraguayan capital won the Panam Sports vote in Santiago, prevailing 28–24 over RioNiterói to secure its first edition of the Games.

Overview

  • Delegates meeting in Santiago selected Asunción after final presentations from both candidacies.
  • The result awarded Asunción 28 of 53 available votes, surpassing the 27-vote threshold, while RioNiterói received 24 under a system that gives past hosts an additional vote.
  • RioNiterói’s bid leaned on reuse of 2007 and 2016 venues and a US$667.5 million operational budget, with separate legacy pledges for a Line 3 metro link, VLT corridors and accelerated sanitation of Guanabara Bay.
  • Assunción’s plan includes a new athletics stadium, a 10,000-seat arena and upgrades to transport and lodging, and Panam Sports cited Paraguay’s staging of the 2025 Junior Pan American Games as a factor.
  • Panam Sports said it will release the preparation and inspection schedule in the coming months, and the official dates for the 2031 Pan American and Parapan American Games remain to be set.
