ASU Puts Hockey Coach Greg Powers on Paid Administrative Leave

An internal review flagged a missing training-plan submission and use of an uncontracted outside trainer as investigations and calls for an independent probe intensify.

Overview

  • The university placed Greg Powers on paid leave Wednesday while assistant Mike Corbett will lead the team for immediate games and an interim coach will be named soon.
  • The action follows an internal review that found the Aug. 20 outdoor workout did not have a submitted training plan and was led by former Green Beret Tim Ziesel without a contract.
  • Twenty-one-year-old defenseman Matthew Mayich collapsed during the Aug. 20 session and remains hospitalized with his family’s attorney saying he has little or no chance of recovery.
  • Seven players sent an anonymous 26-page letter accusing staff of denying water, failing to follow heat-acclimatization and cooling protocols, and asking that staff be placed on leave pending an independent investigation.
  • The Arizona State Police are conducting a criminal assessment that is expected to be sent to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office and could inform possible charges or further outside review.
