Astros’ Bryan Abreu Suspended 2 Games for Intentionally Hitting Rangers' Adolis Garcia in ALCS
Suspension announced by Major League Baseball due to the intentionally dangerous pitch, amid protests from the Astros and potential fines for other players; appeal expected.
- Astros' player Bryan Abreu has been suspended for two games by Major League Baseball for his intentional pitch hitting the Texas Rangers’ Adolis García in Game 5 of the ALCS, which led to a benches-clearing incident.
- In addition to the suspension, Abreu, García and Astros Manager Dusty Baker were all issued undisclosed fines. Astros' Lance McCullers Jr. and Rangers' Matt Bush, who aren't on the ALCS rosters, were also fined and are now prohibited from sitting on their teams’ benches for the rest of the series.
- The incident happened after García hit a three-run home run and celebrated, a situation that could have sparked tensions. The hit-by-pitch happened two innings after García's home run, with a runner on first and none out.
- Despite Abreu’s suspension, the Astros managed to secure a victory in Game 5 thanks to José Altuve’s three-run home run in the ninth inning, giving them a 3-2 edge in the best-of-7 ALCS.
- Abreu's suspension would start with Game 6 on Sunday unless he appeals, which could delay the enforcement of the suspension until the 2024 regular season. If the Astros advance to the World Series and Abreu appeals unsuccessfully, he would be ineligible to start.
