McCullers underwent surgery to repair a flexor tendon and remove a bone spur in his throwing arm.
McCullers injured his arm during last year's playoffs and reaggravated it during spring training this year.
The procedure will keep McCullers out for the remainder of this season and all of next season.
The loss of McCullers for two full seasons is a major blow to the Astros' pitching staff.
McCullers also missed all of 2019 recovering from Tommy John surgery.
