Astronauts Install Seventh IROSA on International Space Station

The new roll-out array increases the station’s usable power to better support systems and operations through its planned retirement.

Overview

  • NASA’s Anil Menon and Canada’s Joshua Kutryk completed a 7-hour, 11-minute spacewalk to install and unfurl the seventh of eight IROSA roll-out solar arrays.
  • The panel was mounted on the station’s port truss and connected during an orbital night pass so electricians could safely mate the power cables.
  • Each IROSA adds roughly 8 kilowatts and the full eight-array upgrade will raise available station power from about 160 kW to roughly 215 kW.
  • Canada played a major operational role: the Canadarm2 robotic arm moved the folded IROSA, Canadian flight controllers served as capcom, and Kutryk became the fifth Canadian to walk in space.
  • Mission teams are preparing for a Nov. 5, 2026 EVA to install the eighth and final IROSA which will complete the multi-year power-upgrade that began in 2021.
