AstraZeneca Opens Barcelona Global Hub at Estel Building, Plans Ninth Floor

The site anchors a €1.3 billion investment through 2027 to fuse biomedical research with data science in the city.

Overview

  • The company now occupies eight of 14 floors and says it will add a ninth, bringing its footprint to about 60% of the Estel building.
  • About 1,600 employees have moved in, with a target of roughly 2,000 by year’s end as teams consolidate into the new headquarters.
  • The hub reports 387 R&D projects and more than 190 clinical trials, with around 60% in oncology, 13% in cardiovascular disease and 10% in respiratory disease.
  • Work spans oncology, cardiovascular, renal and metabolic, respiratory and immunology, rare diseases, vaccines and immunotherapies, supported by extensive data and AI roles.
  • The inauguration drew Catalonia’s president Salvador Illa, Spain’s health minister Mónica García, science secretary Juan Cruz Cigudosa and Barcelona mayor Jaume Collboni at the revived former Telefónica site, which reopened in June after 13 years vacant.
