Overview
- On August 18, the Assam government notified protected-class status for eight communities in the Tirap Tribal Belt, including Ahom, Moran, Matak, Chutia, Koch Rajbongshi, Tea Tribes, Gorkha and Adivasi.
- CCTOA denounced the decision as anti-tribal, announced plans to challenge it in the Gauhati High Court, and organized symbolic burning of the gazette on August 21.
- Sadiya Tribal Sangha and AATS/AATSU held protests in Sadiya and Kokrajhar, warning they will escalate agitation if the order is not withdrawn.
- Tribal organizations allege promised top-level consultations never occurred and warn the expanded list could enable land encroachment that weakens protections for original inhabitants.
- The notification, signed by Additional Chief Secretary Lamchonghoi Sweety Changsang under Section 160(2) of the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation, 1886, covers 62 villages totaling over 2,90,000 bighas in the Margherita Revenue Circle.
