Assam’s Four Tiger Reserves Gain CA|TS Approval
International accreditation confirms these protected areas meet global standards for habitat care, anti-poaching, scientific monitoring and community engagement; the status should strengthen protection and open new funding and tourism channels.
Overview
- The CA|TS International Executive Committee accredited Nameri, completing CA|TS-approved status for Kaziranga, Manas, Orang and Nameri and marking a unified endorsement of management across Assam's tiger sites.
- Nameri’s accreditation followed a Wildlife Institute of India-validated census that recorded a rise in tigers from three in 2022 to 12 at the end of 2025, a key metric used in the review.
- Recent validated counts show Kaziranga increased from 104 adult tigers in 2022 to 148 in 2025 and Manas rose from about 57 to over 63 in the same period, while Orang’s population has held steady within a larger regional block.
- CA|TS evaluates concrete management areas such as habitat management, anti-poaching operations, scientific monitoring and community integration, and the approvals signal those systems are in place at the four reserves.
- State officials credited frontline forest staff and community work for the gains, and they expect the accreditation to improve protection on the ground, boost eligibility for international conservation funding and raise responsible wildlife tourism prospects.
