Overview
- The Assam government introduced the Assam Higher Education Council Bill in the state assembly to create a new statutory apex body for higher education.
- Under the proposal the council would operate through a General Council and an Executive Council with representatives from universities, colleges, government officials and a UGC nominee.
- The government says the council is meant to act as an intermediary between the University Grants Commission, the state and institutions to coordinate academic planning and governance.
- Separately, officials have begun immediate relief for flood-affected students by procuring fresh textbooks for Sivasagar and Charaideo and planning replacement uniforms for about 1.5 lakh pupils.
- Preliminary assessments indicate nearly 80% of schools in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat were affected and large-scale repairs will wait for detailed damage reports being prepared with NDRF and SDRF support.
