Assam SIT Submits Report on Alleged Pakistan Links, CM Alleges ‘Startling Facts’

The government will review the sealed findings before a cabinet decision on disclosure.

Overview

  • The Special Investigation Team set up in February submitted its report on Wednesday to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati.
  • Sarma said the inquiry points to a larger conspiracy and claims it establishes the involvement of a British national married to an Indian MP, as well as facilitation by Pakistan’s interior ministry of an Assam MP’s visit.
  • Officials said the report will be examined in detail and placed before the state cabinet, after which the findings may be made public and could be referred to central agencies.
  • Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, who has been the focus of the allegations, rejected the claims as fabricated and politically motivated, and party leader Pawan Khera questioned the chief minister’s public commentary on the probe.
  • The SIT was constituted to investigate Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh and ‘unknown others’ under national-security provisions, and the contents of its report have not been released.
