Assam SIT Makes First Arrest in Zubeen Garg Case as Raids Target Festival Organiser

The chief minister says the probe will move to the CBI if public confidence in the state inquiry falters.

Overview

  • Musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, a longtime bandmate who accompanied Zubeen Garg to Singapore, was arrested in Guwahati and taken into custody for questioning, the first arrest in the case.
  • SIT teams raided the Guwahati residence of Northeast India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, who remains untraceable, as authorities launched a manhunt and barred him and his groups from hosting events.
  • Security forces, including CRPF personnel, patrolled around Mahanta’s Geetanagar home, and officials said all those present with Garg in Singapore will be questioned.
  • Investigators are tracking other key figures linked to the trip, including manager Siddharth Sharma, with more summons and potential detentions expected.
  • The Assam Association Singapore said some members are assisting investigators and will refrain from public comment, while AASU and AJYCP announced statewide candlelight vigils on September 26 demanding a thorough, impartial inquiry.
