Overview
- Assam’s Special Investigation Team submitted its report on September 10 to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on allegations tied to Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi.
- Sarma said the probe unearthed "startling facts" that point to a wider conspiracy, including the role of a British national married to an Indian MP and facilitation by Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior of an Assam MP’s visit.
- He said the report will be examined in detail and placed before the state Cabinet, after which the findings would be made public.
- The Chief Minister has previously flagged the SIT’s limited remit—such as restricted access to older telecom records—and indicated that consultation with national leaders or a referral to central agencies could follow depending on the findings.
- Gaurav Gogoi rejected the accusations as fabricated and politically motivated, accusing the Chief Minister of using the issue to deflect from alleged corruption.
