Assam Set to Greenlight Statewide Mineral Exploration as Limestone Auctions Progress

Overview

  • The Assam government will imminently issue a blanket order granting the Centre permission for geological investigations across the entire state.
  • The Geological Survey of India has identified more than 36,000 sq km with mineral potential, equivalent to nearly 3,000 prospective mines in the Northeast.
  • Auctions for seven limestone blocks in Dima Hasao have seen five blocks awarded and two entering a second bidding round, with at least one block slated for operation by December 2025.
  • The National Mineral Exploration Trust has completed three key projects in Assam targeting limestone, iron and sillimanite deposits.
