Assam Rifles Seize 1.6 Lakh Yaba Tablets in Jiribam, Manipur

The handover to Jiribam police signals a wider crackdown under President’s rule.

Overview

  • Assam Rifles and Manipur Police conducted a joint operation on December 24 in Jiribam that recovered 1,60,000 Yaba tablets valued at about Rs 40 crore.
  • One suspect was apprehended, and both the contraband and the detainee were handed over to Jiribam Police for further investigation.
  • In a separate action in Imphal West, security forces arrested a 44-year-old cadre of the proscribed Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup from a rented house in Keishampat Leimajam Leikai.
  • An associate was also taken into custody, with recoveries that included 111 rounds of ammunition and a 36 HE grenade without a detonator.
  • Authorities say these operations form part of continuing searches during prolonged ethnic unrest that has left over 260 dead and led to President’s rule in Manipur.
