Assam Rifles Convoy Ambushed in Manipur’s Bishnupur, Killing 2 and Wounding 5

Authorities under President’s Rule have launched large-scale searches after the unclaimed strike in an AFSPA-exempt valley area.

Overview

  • Gunmen opened fire around 5:50 pm on Sept. 19 at Nambol Sabal Leikai on NH-2 as a 33 Assam Rifles column moved from Imphal toward Bishnupur.
  • The fallen were identified as Naib-Subedar Shyam Gurung and Rifleman Ranjit Singh Kashyap, with five injured evacuated to RIMS, Imphal, and reported stable.
  • Security forces rushed reinforcements, cordoned the area, recovered spent cartridges, and began combing operations to track the attackers.
  • No group has claimed responsibility; Manipur Police sources suspect the valley-based PLA, a banned insurgent outfit.
  • Residents held protests on Sept. 20 condemning the firing in a public area not under AFSPA, as officials said troops showed restraint to avoid civilian harm.
