Assam Restores Internet in Karbi Anglong, Sets Court-Led Path on Grazing-Reserve Dispute

Implementation now depends on a Gauhati High Court ruling following a January 5 filing by the autonomous council.

Overview

  • After tripartite talks on December 26, authorities moved to cancel trade licences on VGR and PGR land, begin fencing and afforestation of about 8,000 bighas, and relocate government offices from those reserves.
  • The state, KAAC and Karbi representatives will jointly approach the Gauhati High Court, with eviction actions to follow the court’s directions and the KAAC directed to submit an affidavit by January 5.
  • Most police cases from the unrest will be withdrawn, except those tied to a death by arson, and officials announced Rs 10 lakh compensation and a government job for a bereaved family member.
  • Mobile internet services were restored on December 28 after authorities cited improved conditions, with security forces maintaining vigilance and follow-up talks set for January 16–17.
  • The recent clashes left two people dead, more than 170 security personnel injured, and included arson that destroyed the Karbi Anglong council chief’s ancestral house.
