Assam Police Arrest Two Bangladesh-Linked Terrorists, Prevent Major Attack
Operation Praghat uncovers sleeper cells, arms cache, and terror plans linked to al-Qaeda-affiliated Ansarullah Bangla Team.
- The Assam Police's Special Task Force arrested two suspects, Abdul Zaher Sheikh and Sabbir Mirdha, in Kokrajhar district on Tuesday night as part of Operation Praghat.
- Investigations revealed the suspects were members of the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), a Bangladesh-based terror group affiliated with al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).
- A search of their hideout uncovered a large cache of weapons, including handmade rifles resembling AK-series assault rifles, ammunition, IED components, and explosives intended for mass destruction.
- The arrests follow the detention of eight other ABT operatives last week across Assam, West Bengal, and Kerala, including a Bangladeshi national allegedly working to establish sleeper cells in India.
- Authorities believe the terror group planned to target Hindu leaders, BJP affiliates, and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) members while coordinating with handlers in Pakistan and Bangladesh.
