Assam Opens Dibrugarh Automated Vehicle Fitness Centre, Signals Shift to Paperless Inspections
The government outlines a PPP rollout that will replace many DTO functions with automated centres.
Overview
- Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the facility near Lahoal Polytechnic in Dibrugarh, built for about Rs 12 crore with fully automated systems.
- The centre operates under an ASTC–Applus Iteuve partnership in which ASTC provides land and local support while Applus supplies equipment and manpower, with revenue sharing.
- A mobile testing unit will conduct on-site fitness checks for small vehicles so owners need not forgo daily earnings to travel for inspections.
- Equipment at the site can test large and heavy vehicles, addressing previous gaps in assessing tractors and other heavy-duty models.
- Sarma said the state is planning to close several District Transport Offices before the next elections and to expand automated centres to Barpeta, Mangaldoi, Hojai, Nagaon and Badarpur, building on pilots at Biswanath, Jorhat and South Salmara that have tested over 3,000 vehicles.
