Overview
- A conference led by minister Keshab Mahanta on Monday, Oct 12, launched Assam’s Phase II and set plans for training, enumeration-block demarcation and operational readiness.
- Census 2027 will run digitally for the first time and offers a self-enumeration option supported by the Census Management and Monitoring System and a Self-Enumeration portal.
- The population enumeration is set for January–February 2027 using a 40-question form that authorities notified in August and republished in some states in September.
- Flood-hit districts Sivasagar and Charaideo completed delayed house-listing after extensions to Oct 31, 2026, but officials warn resistance in roughly 50 Assam–Meghalaya border villages could leave gaps or overlaps in counts.
- States are mobilising extra temporary staff such as Home Guards, forest staff, local council workers and teachers to serve as enumerators and supervisors because accurate counts will shape future funding and planning.
