Overview
- The bicycle was publicly launched and ridden by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday, Oct. 2, and officials said the model will be placed in parks across Guwahati for members of the public to try and review.
- Officials and the manufacturer reported that the frame is bamboo and has Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification, a claim the government has emphasised as part of the pilot.
- Manufacturing has begun at the Bamboo Technology Park in Chhaygaon with an initial target of about 1,000 bicycles per month, a reported investment of roughly Rs 15 crore, and an expected 50–100 direct jobs in the first year.
- The maker and state officials said the project plans multiple variants—single-gear, geared, battery-assisted and children’s models—and may expand to road, mountain and hybrid bikes if demand materialises, though performance claims such as the frame being "stronger than steel" remain company assertions pending wider testing and user feedback.
- The scheme is tied to Assam’s broader push to build a bamboo economy after a national policy reclassified bamboo as a grass, and its success will depend on park trial results, procurement decisions, independent safety and durability validation, and market demand that could boost rural livelihoods and local value addition.
