Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that Assamese will be the compulsory official language for all the government notifications, orders, and acts across the state.

Overview

  • Assamese is now the compulsory language for all government communications across Assam, starting on the Assamese New Year (Bohag).
  • Bengali will be used alongside English in Barak Valley, while Bodo will be used alongside English in the Bodoland Territorial Region.
  • All central government documents must be translated into Assamese, Bengali, or Bodo, as applicable, within 30 days, with legacy documents to be translated over the next two years.
  • English remains the authoritative language for legal clarity, inter-state communication, and court-related matters.
  • The Anuvaad Bhashini App is recommended for translations, with officials required to verify the accuracy of translated documents.
