Overview

  • BJP state president Dilip Saikia announced that eviction operations will press on under Mission Bhumiputra to reclaim over 13,374 bighas of encroached xatra lands.
  • The Congress Legislature Party submitted a memorandum to Governor Acharya urging a suspension of ongoing and planned evictions on grounds of Sixth Schedule, Forest Rights Act and PESA breaches.
  • Opposition leaders say mass evictions since 2024 in Sixth Schedule districts have displaced more than 10,000 tribal, indigenous and erosion-displaced families without Gram Sabha approval.
  • The Sonapur Kachutali eviction, where police firing killed two villagers and injured 33, is cited as a key example of alleged human rights violations during the drives.
  • Congress has demanded a comprehensive land rights regularisation policy to distinguish long-settled residents from illegal encroachers and ensure legal rehabilitation.
