Overview

  • Eviction operations concluded on June 17 after heavy security forces and about 20 bulldozers cleared nearly 1,500 bighas in Hasila Beel, demolishing homes, shops and five Lower Primary Schools
  • Authorities served eviction notices in 2023, 2024 and again in June 2025 to approximately 667 families accused of illegally occupying government land
  • Affected residents, many from the Bengali-speaking Muslim community with generational ties to the area, were left without shelter or interim relief
  • Opposition leaders, including Congress MLAs, have condemned the demolitions as inhumane and submitted memorandums to state and presidential offices demanding immediate rehabilitation
  • Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma defended the drive as part of a four-year campaign to reclaim encroached public land and vowed to press on with similar operations
