Monsoon Fury Floods Assam and South Gujarat, Thousands Evacuated

Forecasters warn more heavy spells are likely, raising the risk to rivers and urban areas.

Overview

  • The southwest monsoon intensified on Thursday, producing concentrated extreme downpours that caused flash floods in south Gujarat and major riverine flooding in Assam.
  • Umbergaon taluka in Valsad district recorded more than 1,100 millimetres of rain in short intervals, which overwhelmed drainage, overtopped rivers and submerged large parts of towns and villages.
  • Authorities in Gujarat have relocated between 22,000 and 38,000 people and rescued over 1,200, while the Indian Army, NDRF and SDRF have been deployed for large-scale rescue and relief operations.
  • Assam’s floods have killed at least 47 people and affected more than 640,000 residents, with several rivers flowing above danger levels and thousands sheltering in relief camps.
  • Transport and services are badly hit: multiple railway routes were suspended or curtailed, hundreds of roads closed, schools shut in affected districts, and officials warned that continued heavy rain and reservoir releases could worsen flooding.
