Overview

  • The Biswanath district administration cleared nearly 175 bighas (about 23 hectares) of the Japariguri Village Grazing Reserve on August 17, affecting 307–309 families
  • Eviction notices served on August 1 gave settlers 15 days to vacate, leading many households to voluntarily pull down their own structures before the operation
  • Officials deployed roughly 20 excavators, 10 bulldozers and between 600 and 1,000 police and paramilitary personnel divided across four zones to carry out the clearance
  • Evicted families, many of whom say they were displaced by floods and erosion decades ago, have not been offered any specific rehabilitation or relief package
  • The All-Assam Minority Students’ Union condemned the drive as inhuman and has demanded that formal rehabilitation be guaranteed before any future clearances
