Assam Detains Seven Who Re-Entered From Bangladesh, Border Lapses Probed

Authorities are probing a suspected trafficking route that exploited gaps in border fencing.

Overview

  • Village Defence Party members in Mantali/Manatoli intercepted the group near the Mahishasan border belt during patrols and handed them to the BSF and Sribhumi police.
  • The detainees said they were pushed out on December 19 via Sutarkandi, blocked by Bangladesh’s border guards, then guided back into India through a fencing gap by traffickers.
  • Seven were identified as Abbas Khan, Anwar Khan, Taher/Tahir Ali, Ayesha Khatun/Ayesha Khanam, Rustam Ali, Abdul Aziz and Idris/Idrish Ali, with one woman among them.
  • Police recovered Indian identity documents such as Aadhaar and voter papers, and VDP members reported photos of purported court orders declaring some as foreigners.
  • Officials are verifying identities and documents, investigating the trafficking network, enhancing vigilance in the border belt, and reviewing surveillance and enforcement practices; a separate suspect was also detained in Sribhumi town with Bangladeshi currency.
