Assam Detains Over 110 as Sribhumi Bandh Turns Violent

Authorities enforced BNSS Section 163 curbs to contain protests over the Tagore-linked renaming in Sribhumi.

Overview

  • A 12-hour shutdown called by the Karimganj Zila Naam Paribartan Pratirudh Samiti and backed by Congress, Left parties, and other groups drew a partial response, with many offices open but public transport curtailed.
  • Clashes broke out in multiple areas, with Badarpur reporting road blockades, stone-pelting, a police lathi-charge, and the arrest of an NC College teacher for alleged incitement.
  • Sribhumi’s senior superintendent of police said protesters, including minors, pelted stones at officers, prompting a lathi-charge and preventive detentions under Section 163 of the BNSS with additional forces deployed.
  • Local reports said at least 41 students and nine security personnel were injured after an alleged lathi-charge near NC College, and Zila Parishad member Archana Dutta was assaulted and hospitalized in the district town.
  • The district’s renaming from Karimganj to Sribhumi was approved last year citing Rabindranath Tagore’s 1919 reference, a move defended by the chief minister even as authorities now review further action after the unrest.
