Assam Could Tap 13,428 MW of Rooftop Solar, iFOREST Study Finds

Releasing the full 13,428 MW capacity will require reforms in funding, regulation, technical training despite 60 MW already installed under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana.

Overview

  • The iFOREST study maps Assam’s rooftop solar potential at 13,428 MW, more than seven times the state’s current 1,900 MW target under its Integrated Clean Energy Policy 2025.
  • Residential and mixed-use buildings account for over 95% of the state’s rooftop capacity, with Guwahati alone able to host between 625 MW and 984 MW.
  • Under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, 20,000 rooftop systems have been installed, adding about 60 MW of clean energy to the state grid.
  • Key obstacles to wider adoption include limited consumer awareness, high upfront costs, a shortage of skilled technicians and delays in solar loan disbursements.
  • iFOREST calls for policy, financial and institutional reforms such as concessional loans, virtual net metering and local manufacturing hubs to accelerate deployment.
