Assam Congress Seeks CBI Probe Into Tezpur University VC Over Corruption Allegations

The appeal follows a ministry assurance that the vice-chancellor will not run the university during a formal inquiry.

Overview

  • The Congress Legislature Party filed a complaint with the CBI’s Guwahati office requesting an independent, time-bound investigation into alleged financial and administrative irregularities.
  • The letter, signed by Debabrata Saikia with MLAs Nurul Huda and Sibamoni Bora, asks investigators to review procurement and tender records and to verify RTI-based claims that documents on the VC’s appointment and qualifications are unavailable.
  • The NSUI’s Hailakandi district unit lodged a police complaint alleging criminal breach of trust, cheating, conspiracy and money laundering, accusing the VC of large-scale misuse of public funds.
  • Tezpur University has remained shut since November 29 with end-term exams cancelled as students, teachers and staff unions demand the VC’s removal, while he has stayed away from campus since September 22.
  • A Ministry of Education team visited the campus over the weekend and issued a written assurance that Shambhu Nath Singh would no longer administer the university, and the senior-most professor, Bhattacharyya, has assumed charge as acting VC citing the Tezpur University Act, 1993.
