Overview
- The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee lodged a complaint/FIR at Bhangagarh police station naming Assam BJP vice president Ratna Singh, media convenor Rupam Goswami and others for alleged vandalism, trespass and threats during the August 31 protest.
- The filing alleges BJP workers broke police barricades, tried to force entry into Rajiv Bhawan, destroyed hoardings and assaulted on-duty DCP Mrinal Deka, including by throwing black ink on his face and uniform.
- Congress submitted video footage and eyewitness accounts and cited sections 91, 131, 132, 191, 192, 324, 329 and 351 of the BNS/Indian Justice Code, while seeking CCTV review, medical examination of the DCP and witness protection.
- Bhangagarh police said they have initiated an inquiry, reported no arrests and indicated a case had not yet been registered as of the latest statements.
- The protest followed claims of derogatory remarks about the Prime Minister’s mother; Congress says Rahul Gandhi made no such comments and points to BJP worker Mohammed Rizvi’s later statement in Bihar, with the party also alleging related attacks on its Sonitpur and Nagaon offices.
