Assam CM Opens NFR-Built Panbazar Road Over Bridge in Guwahati

The Rs 47 crore, 290‑metre span provides the clearances needed for faster electric train movement.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Panbazar ROB on September 27 in the presence of state dignitaries and senior Northeast Frontier Railway officials.
  • The new bridge replaces a 1965 structure that had narrow width, low clearance and waterlogging issues that choked traffic and hindered electrified rail operations.
  • The project, initiated in March 2024 and completed in August 2025 within 18 months, cost Rs 47 crore and measures 290 metres.
  • Key features include a 7.5 m carriageway, 1.5 m footpaths on both sides, a 60‑metre bow‑string girder, composite girders and 41 foundation piles to improve vertical and horizontal clearances.
  • Sarma tied the opening to wider upgrades, citing Guwahati station redevelopment with an ASTC–NFR land swap enabling two entry gates, progress in electrification and sanctioned double‑line projects between LumdingFurkating and Furkating–New Tinsukia.
