Overview

• On June 24, 2025, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma toured the 3,300-bigha Chirakuta Charuwa Bakra site in Bilasipara co-district to assess its suitability for the 3,400 MW plant
• The project was shifted from Kokrajhar after local protests over tribal land rights; tenders will be floated shortly for a construction start in November 2025
• In May, the state cabinet approved the Assam Thermal Power Generation Project Promotion Policy 2025 to attract large-scale investment into the sector
• Officials project Assam’s energy demand to climb to 5,000 MW by 2030 with further growth to 7,000 MW by 2035, positioning the plant as central to state self-reliance
• The government has pledged compensation and rehabilitation grants for legally residing inhabitants; the plant is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs for local youth
