Assam Cabinet Approves Report on ST Status for Six Communities

The report will be tabled in the Assembly during the winter session before being sent to the Union Home Ministry for review.

Overview

  • The proposal covers Tai Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Matak/Motok, Koch-Rajbongshi and Tea Tribes (Adivasis), who are currently listed as OBCs.
  • The three-member Group of Ministers was led by Ranoj Pegu with Keshab Mahanta and Pijush Hazarika, and its recommendations will first be placed before the state House.
  • Demonstrations intensified on Thursday with tribal organisations, including ABSU, rallying in Kokrajhar and students at Bodoland University protesting and forcing an exam postponement.
  • The move follows years of demands and a 2019 Rajya Sabha bill that was introduced but not taken up, with the six groups estimated to constitute roughly 27% of Assam’s population.
  • The Cabinet in the same sitting cleared land transfer for a textile and heritage museum showcasing the Vrindavani Vastra on loan from the British Museum and approved new ASSTC Teachers’ Service Rules, 2025.
