Assam Begins MMUA Rollout With Rs 10,000 Grants in Tinsukia and Dhemaji

The three-year plan links larger follow-on funding to reviews of how recipients use the starter money.

Overview

  • In Tinsukia, 14,301 self-help group members received Rs 10,000 each, including 10,654 from rural areas and 3,647 from urban areas.
  • In Dhemaji, more than 36,000 women were given Rs 10,000 each to start small businesses.
  • Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the initiative aims to help women become “Lakhpati Baideos,” earning over Rs 1 lakh annually.
  • The government will review utilization after 4–5 months, with eligible members slated for Rs 25,000 in year two and Rs 50,000 in year three.
  • Assam counts about 4 lakh SHGs with roughly 40 lakh members, and the state estimates Rs 4,000 crore for the first round and Rs 10,500 crore for the next, with full coverage in Tinsukia targeted by November–December.
