Assam Arrests Suspected JMB Conduit in Dhubri as Police Trace Cross-Border Phone Links

Officials say the probe is nearing completion with tightened night-time security planned for border districts during Durga Puja.

Thirty infiltrators were detained on Sunday (August 24) and 21 were caught on Tuesday (August 26) near the Sribhumi border in Assam.

Overview

  • Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Ali Hussain Bepari was detained for allegedly sending Dhubri residents’ phone numbers to Bangladesh nationals linked to JMB to target them for radicalisation.
  • Police say call connections between local residents and contacts in Bangladesh have been established and that further disclosures are expected as the inquiry enters its final stage.
  • Sarma reported that 51 suspected Bangladeshi nationals were detained near the Sribhumi border between Sunday and Tuesday and were pushed back, with additional detentions reported in South Salmara.
  • The state will continue night-time shoot-at-sight orders during Durga Puja in sensitive border areas, citing recent activities in Dhubri and concerns over law and order.
  • Sarma said the government has paused Aadhaar enrolment for people above 18 in an effort to identify and track suspected illegal migrants.
