Overview

  • Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma will hold talks in Guwahati on June 2 to address the six outstanding border sectors.
  • The second phase covers Block I (Psiar-Khanduli) in West Jaintia Hills, Block II, Borduar, Nongwah-Mawtamur and Deshdoomreah in Ri-Bhoi, plus Langpih in West Khasi Hills.
  • An MoU signed in March 2022 resolved six earlier disputes by dividing 36.79 sq km between the states—18.28 sq km to Meghalaya and 18.51 sq km to Assam.
  • Three regional committees tasked with gathering evidence, consulting local stakeholders and mapping historical claims have yet to submit their reports.
  • Meghalaya officials say they are ready with documentation but Assam’s looming Assembly elections have delayed joint site inspections and dampened hopes for immediate breakthroughs.
