Aso Region and Tokara Islands Shaken by Separate Intensity-3 Quakes

Officials reported no tsunami risk with only localized shaking.

Overview

  • At about 7:35 a.m. JST, a quake in the Aso region of Kumamoto registered seismic intensity 3, with an estimated depth of around 10 km.
  • Intensity 3 shaking in that event was recorded in Aso Ichinomiya, Ubuyama, and on Mount Aso, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
  • At about 7:51 a.m. JST, a separate quake produced seismic intensity 3 on Akusekijima in Toshima Village, Kagoshima Prefecture.
  • The Japan Meteorological Agency said there is no tsunami concern for either earthquake.
  • An earlier tremor around 6:12 a.m. registered intensity 2 in the Aso area, and initial reports did not include damage information.
