ASML Posts Record Q3 Sales and Flags 2027–28 Supply Shortfall

Customer orders reaching into 2029–2030 have pushed management to consider faster and larger capacity builds to meet sustained AI-driven chip demand.

Overview

  • ASML reported a record third-quarter with net sales around €116.6–117 billion, a 57.5% gross margin, and €5.0 billion in net income.
  • The company issued fourth-quarter guidance of €142–152 billion in net sales and maintained a full-year 2026 sales outlook of about €440–450 billion.
  • Management said customer interest now extends toward 2029–2030 and that planned 2027–2028 supply will likely fall short, prompting work to expand 2028 capacity beyond the previously announced 30% plan.
  • Higher-than-expected installed-base services of about €3.3 billion helped lift margins, and ASML returned capital with roughly €4.1 billion of share buybacks plus a €1.88 interim dividend.
  • Because ASML tools have long lead times and are needed for chip fabs to scale, any change to its 2028 capacity plans could shift when chipmakers bring new AI-focused production online and affect the wider semiconductor supply chain.
