ASI Reports Strong FY24 Manufacturing Growth, Jobs Up Nearly 6%

The official survey underscores robust factory expansion alongside persistent reliance on contract labour.

Overview

  • Manufacturing gross value added rose 11.9% to ₹24.6 lakh crore in 2023-24.
  • Total industrial output increased 5.8% to ₹153.3 lakh crore, while invested capital climbed 10.8% to about ₹68 lakh crore.
  • Factory employment grew 5.9% to 19.5 million, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and adding more than 5.7 million jobs since 2014-15.
  • Basic metals led manufacturing GVA, followed by motor vehicles, chemical products, food products and pharmaceuticals.
  • Jobs are concentrated in five states—Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka—and about 42% of factory workers are contract labourers.
