Overview
- A Ludhiana court on June 6 granted interim bail to Congress leader Bharat Bhushan Ashu and directed him to join the Punjab Vigilance Bureau’s probe into alleged misuse of school land.
- Authorities allege the 4.7-acre parcel in Sarabha Nagar was allotted at a subsidised rate for educational purposes but has been rented out for commercial activities valued at around ₹2,400 crore in irregular income.
- On the same day, the AAP-led Punjab government suspended SSP Jagatpreet Singh for “grave misconduct and dereliction of duty” over the issuance of the summons to Ashu without proper procedural approvals.
- Aam Aadmi Party officials claim the summons were orchestrated by Ashu to win sympathy ahead of the by-poll, while Congress leaders denounce the suspension as a tactic to intimidate their candidate.
- With 25 other former school management members also summoned, the Ludhiana West campaign has escalated into a broader clash over alleged political misuse of state machinery.
