Ashton Daniels To Enter Transfer Portal, Thinning Auburn’s Quarterback Depth

With Jackson Arnold expected to depart, Alex Golesh faces a January portal search for an experienced starter.

Overview

  • Daniels announced he will enter the portal when it opens Jan. 2, citing in a social media post that a planned return “didn’t work out,” and he retains one season of eligibility after preserving a redshirt.
  • The former Stanford starter appeared in four games in 2025, throwing for 797 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions, and rushing for 280 yards and two scores.
  • He replaced Jackson Arnold during a comeback win over Arkansas and then started three of Auburn’s final four games, including a 400-plus yard outing in an overtime loss to Vanderbilt.
  • With Daniels planning to leave and Arnold also expected to exit, Auburn’s scholarship options narrow to Deuce Knight and incoming freshman Rhys Brush, creating an urgent need to add at least one quarterback.
  • The NCAA’s lone winter window runs Jan. 2–16, and local reporting points to USF’s Byrum Brown as a possible target if he enters the portal, while Golesh has emphasized building competition before naming a starter.
