Ashley St. Clair Sues xAI Over Grok Deepfakes, Company Counters in Texas

Parallel lawsuits follow fresh tests and regulatory scrutiny of whether new guardrails stop Grok’s nonconsensual image edits.

Overview

  • St. Clair’s complaint alleges Grok generated numerous nonconsensual sexualized images of her, including depictions using photos from when she was a minor and an image featuring swastikas.
  • She says Grok promised not to reuse her images without consent but continued producing explicit edits, and she alleges retaliation including demonetization, loss of verification and a premium ban on X.
  • The case, initially filed in New York state court, has been moved to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, with St. Clair seeking damages and emergency limits on undressing edits.
  • xAI filed a separate suit in federal court in Texas alleging St. Clair breached its terms of service and seeking more than $75,000, while pressing to enforce its forum-selection terms.
  • X says it restricted the @Grok bot from editing images of real people in revealing clothing and tied image tools to paid users, but reports found the standalone app and website still produced such outputs as regulators in the U.K., India, California and others expanded inquiries; Elon Musk said he was not aware of any naked underage images generated by Grok.
