Overview
- The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Ashkan Moghaddam, who was pronounced dead at a hospital after being pulled from the tank and receiving CPR.
- Moghaddam collapsed Monday morning while a third-party crew was cleaning an empty underground gasoline tank at the Costco on Expo Parkway during pump remodeling.
- Fire officials said he either passed out from gas fumes or suffered a medical emergency after entering through a roughly 3-foot opening and climbing 10 to 15 feet down.
- Coworkers were unable to remove him before rescue and hazmat teams arrived, conducted air monitoring, donned respiratory protection, and extracted him under hazardous fume and explosion conditions.
- The gas station area was closed for hazard mitigation and an investigation, and officials said there was no ongoing threat to the public.
