Asda Opens First Store in New Express Rollout in Castleford

The compact format brings Asda’s value offer into areas where the grocer has had limited reach.

Overview

  • The Castleford site on Holywell Lane was converted from the former New Airedale pub and opened this week as an Asda Express.
  • The store carries more than 3,000 branded and own-label products, operates 6am to 11pm daily, and offers a Costa Coffee machine, an ATM, and Amazon collections and returns.
  • On-demand delivery from the site will be available through Uber Eats, Just Eat and Deliveroo.
  • Asda says the Castleford launch is the first of up to 20 Express openings planned across the UK before the end of 2025.
  • The retailer expects to have nearly 500 Express locations by year-end and will equip new stores with electronic shelf-edge labels from day one, positioning the format against Tesco Express and Sainsbury’s Local.
