Ascension to Shift Elk Grove Labor and Delivery to Hoffman Estates

A state hearing is set for Sept. 16 with a final vote scheduled for Nov. 18.

Overview

  • Hospital leaders faced a packed Elk Grove Village town hall, acknowledging concerns and saying the transition plan prioritizes patient safety.
  • Ascension plans to discontinue deliveries in Elk Grove by year’s end pending approval, with births redirected 9–13 miles to Ascension Saint Alexius in Hoffman Estates while prenatal visits can continue locally.
  • The Illinois Department of Public Health will take public comment on Sept. 16, and the Health Facilities and Services Review Board is slated to vote on Nov. 18, after which the transition must be completed within 60 days if approved.
  • Ascension says 89% of affected associates have accepted roles at Saint Alexius, and more than 70 staff members are assigned to manage the transition.
  • Officials said emergency physicians at Elk Grove can deliver babies, OB-GYNs will be on call, some nurses will be trained and retained for urgent cases, and stable patients may be transferred to Hoffman Estates.
