As Oktoberfest Hangovers Hit, Munich Startup Pitches Electrolyte Soda Under Ad Restrictions

A 2024 court ruling bars “anti-hangover” claims for the new Munich-made electrolyte drink aimed at partygoers.

Overview

  • After the first Wiesn weekend, heavy drinking left many visitors nursing headaches, with last year’s medical station reporting about one in three patients for alcohol intoxication.
  • Founders in Munich launched the electrolyte soda “hydro lion,” formulated with sodium, chloride, magnesium and potassium, and early placements include clubs such as P1, Lenbachs, Pomp and Milchbar.
  • Despite targeting revelers and athletes, the beverage cannot be marketed as a hangover cure under an appellate court decision that prohibits health claims for foods labeled as “anti-hangover.”
  • Standard self-care advice remains to eat a substantial fatty or salty meal before drinking, alternate beer with water or soft drinks, and rehydrate with water or an electrolyte solution after returning home.
  • For next-day recovery, coverage recommends salty or potassium-rich foods like rollmops, pickles, broth, bananas or oats, fresh air and light movement, cautious caffeine after water, and avoiding myths such as “hair of the dog” or aspirin–coffee concoctions.
