As Clocks Fall Back Sunday, Red Cross Urges Smoke-Alarm Checks

Working smoke alarms are shown to halve the risk of dying in a home fire.

Overview

  • Test alarms during the time change and replace batteries if needed.
  • Replace any smoke alarm older than 10 years because sensor performance declines over time.
  • Install alarms on every level of the home and inside and outside all bedrooms and sleeping areas.
  • Practice a two-minute escape plan with two ways out of each room and a designated outdoor meeting spot.
  • Over the past year, volunteers in the state responded to more than 1,200 home fires and assisted over 4,330 people, and home fires make up most of the roughly 65,000 disasters the Red Cross handles annually.
