- The Murugappa Group said Vellayan died in Chennai on November 17 after a prolonged illness.
- He was former chairman of the Murugappa Group and Chairman Emeritus of Coromandel International, and he earlier chaired EID Parry.
- He led key industry bodies, including the Fertiliser Association of India and the Indian Sugar Mills Association, and he chaired IIM-Kozhikode’s Board of Governors.
- His board roles also included Kanoria Chemicals & Industries, EXIM Bank, and Indian Overseas Bank.
- An alumnus of The Doon School, SRCC, Aston University, and Warwick Business School, he received honorary Doctor of Science degrees and is survived by his wife Lalitha, sons Arun and Narayanan, and grandchildren.
