Arunachal Flash Floods Kill Three, Leave Two Missing

Heavy monsoon rains are hampering rescue work, creating urgent downstream flood risk for Assam if landslide dams or dam releases fail.

Overview

  • A cloudburst on June 24 triggered a flash flood at the NEEPCO colony in Keyi Panyor that swept away homes and people, with three confirmed dead and two still missing.
  • Search-and-rescue moved into its fifth day with NDRF, SDRF, district police and local volunteers supported by Indian Air Force and state helicopters conducting raft, boat and canine operations and 23 additional NDRF personnel sent to the site.
  • Major roads and bridges, including stretches of NH-13 (Hoj-Potin) and the Kimin-Potin link, have been washed away or repeatedly blocked, isolating multiple districts and delaying fuel, machinery and relief supplies.
  • NEEPCO has begun controlled releases from the Ranganadi dam and suspended power generation while a landslide has dammed the Siji river above Likabali, prompting urgent alerts for downstream Assam communities to be ready for sudden floods.
  • The India Meteorological Department has issued red and orange warnings and forecast pockets of more than 200 mm of rain through Monday, raising the risk of new flash floods, fresh landslides and further disruption to rescue and restoration efforts.
