Arunachal Butterfly Meet Reveals Two Species Previously Unknown in India

Overview

  • Metok Green Sapphire (Heliophorus gloria) and Medog Tufted Ace (Sebastonyma medoensis) were recorded in India for the first time after being known only from southeast Tibet.
  • A total of 107 butterfly species were documented at the Mechukha meet, an unprecedented tally for a high-altitude survey in the Eastern Himalayas.
  • The Tiger-mimic Admiral (Limenitis rileyi) was identified as a new distribution record for India during the event.
  • Organized by the Arunachal Pradesh State Tourism Department, the meet aimed to integrate biodiversity protection with sustainable eco-tourism development.
  • Seventy-two participants from research institutions, universities and local communities conducted butterfly walks, biodiversity trails and educational activities to strengthen conservation awareness.
